September 12-14, 2025 Three Nights at Anchor

Friday Sept. 12, 2025  Rockland to Indian Island Anchorage    47 miles and 5.1 hours

Another beautiful looking cruising day.  Blue sky, light winds, 60 degree temperatures, a moderate swell in the open water areas and just enough chop on the water to make lobster trap buoy markers a shade more challenging to spot.  We're finding the constant watching and manual steering through the buoys a bit exhausting.  Just mentally fatigued and eye strain fatigued after a 5-hour trip.  Nothing extraordinary during the trip.  Lots of open water with some near shore passes.   Lighthouses a plenty as Maine's coast is definitely full of rocky outcroppings and small islands just waiting to claim the unsuspecting boater.

Lighthouse leaving Rockland. Breakwater was almost completely
underwater when we arrived at high tide.

Owls Head Lighthouse

Whitehead Light Station

Marshall Point Lighthouse and Museum

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

Ram Island Lighthouse

Quick loop around Eastern Egg Island.  Last remaining place for possible Puffin sightings but to no avail.  Just too late in the season and they're all somewhere out in the ocean.  Interesting bird.  About the size of a quart container.  They stay out to sea except when they come to a few specific islands to mate.  During the mating season they develop the colorful beak they are known for which then flakes off.  We pass a couple of very different boats during the day.

Nice yacht called us to make sure we would be passing port to port

When we first spotted this, we thought the boat was passing a tug.
Then finally realized that little lobster boat was towing the barge

Windjammer cruise out of Boothbay Harbor

Passing through the swing bridge at Southport.  Almost at the anchorage

Sunset at the end of Day 1

Spent a second day at anchor here.  Time for oil and filter changes on the engine.  Also needed to change the transmission fluid.  Nothing too hard - just very tedious adding oil to the transmissions. Needs to be added VERY slowly through the combined oil filler and breather fitting. Now just need to find somewhere to take 9 gallons of used oil.

Oil samples packed up and ready for the mail

Sunset Day 2

Journey for Sept. 12, 2025

Saturday Sept. 14, 2025   Indian Island Anchorage to Snow Island Anchorage  25 miles and 3 hours

Headed to Portland on Monday as I need to pick up some prescriptions.  Decided to move closer to it and Snow Island anchorage up Casco Bay and then into Quahog Bay had nice reviews.  Leaves about a 2-hour cruise to South Portland.  We can get there early and spend the day.  Too expensive to stay more than a day and no moorings or anchorages in that harbor.  So we upped anchor about noon and dropped the hook at 3 in this new location.

This seal popped his head up several times at the anchorage before we left.
Finally got to hear the call of a loon there too.

Cruise over wasn't bad. Weather continues to hold with sunshine, 60 degree temperatures, light winds and moderate swells from the ocean. Seemed like the lobster traps were spread out better today.  Plus, we were driving from the flybridge and had good line of sight.

May not have been as many lobster traps but they were still out there

And of course - more lighthouses like this one at Hendrick's Head

Or the Pond Island Lighthouse

A little swell on our nose as we went south down Sheepscot River but that improved after rounding Small Point and Head Cove and headed north.  A few boats in the anchorage but plenty of room.  Nicely protected with a forested and rocky shoreline.

Heading up Quahog Bay

And getting ready to turn into Snow Island Anchorage
