May 28-30, 2024 Onancock, VA

Tues.  May 28, 2024    Urbanna to Onancock 5 hours and 48 miles

Visited Onancock two years ago on our Washington trip and thought it was a cute little town worth hitting up again.   Has a wonderful donut shop too.   Jamie and Trish had also been here before and said the crab cakes at Mallards Restaurant right on the waterfront next to the marina were some of the best they've had.   So we both cast off lines Tuesday morning and left Urbanna for a relatively smooth crossing of the bay.

Watermen heading out to lay a few more lines of crab pots

Out the Rappahannock was tranquil with an outgoing tide helping speed us along.   Once out to open water the 1' and occasional 2' waves weren't bad.  A bit confused and we activated the stabilizers to smooth things out a bit more.  Sunny skies, moderate temperatures, and moderate winds made for an enjoyable ride from the flybridge.   Once into the Onancock Creek the waves completely disappeared, and it was a smooth although twisty ride up the river, being sure not to miss any of the channel markers.  When we made our 2-night reservation the confirmation showed we would be in slip 6 but upon arrival we were directed to a bulkhead spot behind the restaurant and aside our buddy boat No Rush.  A quick walk up to town followed by dinner at Mallards (crab cakes were pure heaven in the form of all lump meat and no fillers).  Finished the evening playing cards until looper midnight.

Boat all secured and ready for that crabcake dinner

Wed.  May 29, 2024  The day started with a trip to the donut shop.  Yum!!  Some blogging and then boat chores.  Time to change the genny oil and clean out all the water strainers.  Martha took advantage of the free laundry at the marina. Chores done now time for dinner.  Invited Jamie and Trish over for steaks on the grill.  During dinner a wind storm blew in and we watched as the westerly winds pushed water up over the docks and made the parking lot part of the bay, then receded just as quickly.  We'll spend an extra day or two here as a strong northerly is churning up the bay and would make travel uncomfortable.

Rain and windstorm pushed bay water over the docks into the parking lot.
I'm guessing power pedestals on their own pedestals should have been an indicator.

A perfect finish to our steak dinner.  (Thanks Maurice and Karen).

Thurs. May 30, 2024   Up early to make sure Charlie - the dockmaster - could accommodate us for 2 more days until these 15-25 mph winds subside.  No problem staying although No Rush needed to move off the face dock to a normal slip as a catamaran had reservations for the face dock.

Made the most of the day in Onancock.  Took a bike ride around the waterfront neighborhoods finishing at the donut shop just as a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls were being put out. Headed over to tour Ker Place.  Built in 1799 and now home to the county historical society.    Dropped off the bikes and buns at the boat to begin our walking tour of the art galleries in town. They start opening for the weekend crowd on Thursday.

Followed that up with late lunch and a flight at the Taproom where we learned of live music later that night.  Back to the boat for a little siesta then once again to the Taproom.  Local music by mother/son duo Jen and Zane. Nice variety, but we preferred his solos.  Group decision was made to take the ferry over to Tangier Island in the morning.  It's someplace that we've wanted to visit for a number of years and for various reasons hadn't gotten there.
